Every so often I'm struck by how long I've been around. I still can't get used to the fact that half the people in my department are younger than me (that DOES mean that half the people are older than me). But for my first two jobs I was just about the youngest person around (or close to it).
I was at a baby shower this weekend for a good friend (who looks so damned cute pregnant, and who is the recipient of some wonderfully knitted baby things). I only knew one other person there (that was not the mommy to be) and we were talking to a couple people that she had known there. One of them was talking about how her best friend was getting married this fall, and that she was going to be maid of honor. I told her I was going to be matron of honor in the fall, as well, and then I realized that I have known Jill for (wait for it) LONGER THAN THIS GIRL HAS BEEN ALIVE (she is 23, and Jill and I have known each other for almost 24 years). When I mentioned it she said: "Oh, so you've known each other since high school?" I quickly said: "Honey, I'm not THAT old." I don't think that she meant it (she was so embarrassed after those words flew out of my mouth), and she said she really didn't do the math until after I said that. Ha! But it just boggles the mind sometimes. Jill and I have known each other longer than a college grad has been alive.
So, Jill, I will be seeing you REALLY soon, but even so I am sending you a virtual hug. If we were of child rearing age when we met, you or I could have had a grown up child by now. I can't wait to see you!

My students make me feel old all the time. I'll make a reference to a "recent" historical event (like the 89 quake) and they will just look at me with blank stares until I realize that they weren't born at the time. Then there are the few students who have children older than my son -- also disconcerting.
